Root causes:
Breast cancer is a cultural issue because people that is more likely to have breast cancer is through family members that have had breast cancer. Breast cancer is always caused by damage to a cell’s DNA. A woman whose mother, sister, or daughter has had breast cancer is two to three times more likely to develop breast cancer. About 5-10% of breast cancers can be linked to gene mutations (abnormal changes) inherited from one’s mother or father. Most inherited cases of breast cancer are associated with two abnormal genes and they are known as BRCA1 and BRCA2. According to the National Cancer Institute, women with an abnormal BRCA1 or BRCA2 gene have about a 60% risk of being diagnosed with breast cancer during their lifetimes (compared to 12-13% for women overall). This means that having this genes increases the risk of breast cancer.
Breast cancer is a disease that can be developed out of many factors. One important reason is having family history of breast cancer. Women who have close blood relatives with breast cancer have a higher risk of the disease. “The second mostcommened risk is certain inherited genes and about 5% to 10% of breast cancer are thought to be hereditary, meaning that they result directly from gene defects passed on from a parent”. This mean that we can have a higher risk of breast cancer if family members have a history of breast cancer.
